Tom Savage RIP   03/05/2020

The death of Tom Savage on 23rd April severed another link with the Golden Years of the 1960s.

Billy and Paddy O’Brien were working and living in Midleton, and in February 1959 they brought along Paddy’s young brother-in-law, Tom Savage, to play in a challenge game for Éire Óg, in Murphy’s Field on the Chapel Road. From there until the end of 1966, Tom was ever present on Éire Óg hurling teams, winning Mid-Cork Junior titles in 1960, ’61 and’62 and Co. Junior title in 1962. He won a Walsh Cup medal in 1964 and Co. Intermediate runners-up medal in 1965. He also won Mid-Cork Junior B Football medal in 1961, and his brother Denis played some football with the Club in the early ‘60s.

Tom regularly represented the Club on Muskerry teams during those years, and featured on Cork Intermediate teams 1964-1966, and even donned the County Senior jersey in 1964.                                          A talented Basketball player, Tom and his brothers were the backbone of the Midleton Hopes Club. Tom and Denis played on Cork Senior Basketball teams and their brothers, Ger and Raymond, were County minors. Tom was a good swimmer and was known to take a Christmas morning dip at Inch Bay.                                                                                                                                                                           Apart from his prowess at hurling, Tom’s gentle friendly disposition earned him high regard both in the Club and in the Parish.  Suaimhneas  Síorraí  dá  Anam  Dílis.
