Report on Senior A Football Championship game vs Kiskeam   06/09/2020

Éire Óg 2-13

Kiskeam 1-10

A polished Éire Óg delivered on a must win game to extend their campaign by overcoming Kiskeam in a highly entertaining Bons Secour County SAFC tussle at Glantane yesterday.

Weathering an early Kiskeam onslaught, Éire Óg weren’t found wanting and a powerfully structured display surfaced with experienced Daniel Goulding grabbing responsibility to land a 2-7 tally to earn the Mid Cork side a deserved win.

Far from a one man effort, as the game aged, Éire Óg looked the better team throughout the park, victory earns a quarter final meeting against familiar rivals St. Michaels.

That contrasted to Kiskeam, coming into the contest with two straight wins but failing to progress following Mallow’s victory over Bantry Blues in the corresponding pool game with Kiskeam holding an inferior scoring aggregate to lose out. At the outset, Kiskeam laid down a marker to shoot the opening four points from David Scannell, Gene Casey and Tom Sullivan.

Éire Óg recovered from an early black card picked up by defender David Twomey yet once Goulding registered their initial point, they had come out of their shell, confirmed on Dylan Foley setting up Goulding for a goal. Owing much to the strong and assertive play of Conor McGoldrick, John Cooper and Twomey in defence with Jack Murphy and Ronan O’Toole swinging midfield allowed Éire Óg dominate.

Up front, Joe Cooper, Brian Hurley and Goulding posted excellent points though ‘keeper Chris Kelly saved a piledriver from Kiskeam attacker Casey. At the opposite end, Éire Óg grabbed a second goal in injury time, Kiskeam netminder Anthony Casey grounded Foley and Goulding netted the resultant penalty for a 2-6 to 0-7 advantage at the break.

Wayward shooting impacted both sides on the restart, Kiskeam’s fortunes not helped on losing Michael Herlihy to a second yellow card. Steadily Éire Óg extended their position from excellent points to Goulding, Colm O’Callaghan and Joe Cooper.

Kiskeam came close to a goal only for substitute Thomas Casey to be stopped by a wonder block from defender Dermot O’Herlihy. The balance of play remained with Éire Óg before Sean Meehan netted a consolation goal for the Duhallow men.

Scorers for Éire Óg: D Goulding 2-7(0-1f), J Cooper (0-3), C O’Callaghan (0-2), B Hurley 0-1.

Kiskeam: S Meehan (1-1), S O’Sullivan 0-3f, T O’Sullivan 0-3(0-2f), G Casey (0-2), S Scannell (0-1).
